GUELPH, Ontario — The attendance area for a new JK-8 elementary school to be built on Fiddle Park Lane in Shelburne has been decided.

At the board meeting on June 26 trustees voted to approve the recommendations in Report #3 of the New Shelburne Elementary School Boundary Review.

The new school’s attendance area will be an area bounded by Owen Sound Street, Main Street E., County Road 124 and the Town’s northern limit.

“These boundaries ensure that children attending the new school will not have to cross Shelburne’s two busiest streets,” said Board chair Borden said. “Student safety is always a huge concern, and in this case the numbers added up. We’re getting the most logical and safest boundary, while still achieving the goal of balanced and healthy enrolment at all three elementary schools in Shelburne.”

“We’re very pleased at how smoothly this review went,” said Borden. “Parents and the community have been very supportive.”

The Board expects to construct the school on a Fiddle Park Lane site adjacent to the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex in time for a September 2013 opening.

The two-storey building will have a capacity of 426 students, with enough classroom space to accommodate established residential areas and future growth from a large new subdivision in the town’s northeast corner.

Concept designs were presented at a community meeting in February.

The new school will relieve overcrowding at Hyland Heights Elementary School, which has 8 portable classrooms this year. Enrolment is on the rise in Shelburne because of new residential development, and the implementation of Full Day Kindergarten (FDK).

FDK, a provincial initiative, is being phased in by the Board over five years. It began at Centennial Hylands E.S. in Shelburne last September, and will be launched at Hyland Heights in September 2012. Both schools will also receive about $580,000 in renovations to improve kindergarten classrooms.
