CCVI student wins bronze at Canada-Wide Science Fair

CCVI student Sasha Seufert attended the Canada-Wide Science Fair, held in Ottawa May 12-19, 2018. GUELPH, Ontario – A grade 10 student from Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute has won bronze at a national science competition.

Sasha Seufert attended the Canada-Wide Science Fair, held in Ottawa May 12-19, 2018. The event features the top 500 young scientists in the country. It brings science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) out of the classroom and encourages youth to find solutions to real world issues.

Sasha won an Excellence Award and a bronze medal for his biotechnology project Delivering of DNA to Tardigrades via Nematocysts. His idea and project was to isolate unique stinging cells from sea anemones and then use the nematocysts as syringes to inject genes to tardigrades in an attempt understand their unique genome function. Sasha was mentored by CCVI biology teacher Doug Gajic out of the Biotech Lab at CCVI and by Matt Cornish, Director of the Hagen Aqua Lab-University of Guelph.

Sasha was invited to the national competition after winning a gold medal for his project at the Waterloo – Wellington Science and Engineering Fair in April.
