Celebrating Canadian School Library Day at the TJRC

Guelph, ON — October 23 was Canadian School Library Day and the UGDSB’s Terry James Resource Centre celebrated with their “School Libraries are not Extinct” Open House.

Staff at the Board Office popped by the TJRC to participate and interact with each learning activity at their designated stations and through participating in those challenges could win prizes for their classroom.

Lauren Bull, Librarian Supervisor, and the rest of the TJRC staff were excited about the turnout of the event. “It turned out great. This all came from the team and to see it come to fruition is all very exciting.”

Bull said that one of their goals and objectives of the TJRC was letting board staff know that “no matter what role you have at the board, we’re here to support everyone.”

The purpose of Canadian School Library Day is to recognize the incredible capabilities school libraries and learning commons have in assisting student learning and success. Libraries, library staff, and learning commons are more than just places where students go to check out books.

UG teacher-librarians also offered their insight into why school libraries and learning commons matter, what their libraries mean to their educational spaces, and what a teacher-librarian means to their students.

In the future the TJRC hopes to have more opportunities to open up more dialogue on how they can better support staff and students.
