Dec. 11, 2023

Fergus, ON – December 4-10, 2023, was Canada Learning Code Week and Centre Wellington District High School (CWDHS) has implemented the Hackergal program for students who identify as girls to learn about coding and the tech sector.

Hackergal’s mission is “to change the face of computer science and pave the way for a technology industry that is diverse and inclusive of girls and underrepresented groups across Canada.”

This is the first year that CWDHS has run the Hackergal program by tech and math teacher, Katy Lloyd, “It was at the request of a grade 9 student named Sadie at our school. So far we have 9 people signed up.”

Through implementing the Hackergal program at CWDHS the group is hoping to create a safe space “where learners who identify as girls can learn how to code, make mistakes and learn from those mistakes to gain a sought-after skill,” said Lloyd. “I think this is a great opportunity for learners who identify as girls to come out, get comfortable with computers and coding and make some great friendships along the way.”
