April 24, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – A student from College Heights Secondary School has been named the recipient of the 2019 Rotary Indigenous Youth Award.

The award is presented each year to a youth in recognition of their demonstrated leadership qualities in the community and in the promotion of Indigenous culture.

On April 24, Rick Le Feuvre from the Rotary Club of Guelph presented CHSS student Alexis with the award at the Upper Grand District School Board’s annual Turtle Island Heritage Festival.

Alexis (pictured right) is the recipient of the 2019 Rotary Indigenous Youth Award, presented on April 24, 2019.

Alexis is the daughter of a Sixties Scoop survivor and has become a key member of the Anishinaabe community in Guelph. She is a member of the Guelph Indigenous Community Health and Healing Centre Advisory Committee and the UGDSB Indigenous Advisory Committee.

Alexis regularly participates in community events, such as beading and shaker making. She has created presentations on the Indigenous water crisis and social justice issues in Indigenous communities and has presented these to many classes at her school.

Alexis is currently in grade 11. She plans to attend college to study addictions prevention for Indigenous people.

Congratulations Alexis!
