College Heights students building life-saving dog houses for First Nations community

November 25, 2015

As the temperature continues to drop, students at College Heights Secondary School are working to help dogs located in Ontario’s north.

For the second year in a row, grade 11 and 12 construction students will build and ship dog houses to a northern community, where they are desperately needed.

This year, rather than the build taking place in two semesters, students hope to build 50 dog houses and ship them north in early December, so they can be utilized by a northern Ontario First Nation right away.

College Heights has partnered with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), to build and ship 50 dog houses up north. IFAW is a non-profit working to rescue and protect animals around the world.

Here in Canada, IFAW provides veterinary services, vaccination, and education to isolated First Nations communities. Dogs in these communities are typically free-roaming, meaning they’re not confined by leashes or fences. And if there is no shelter for them, the dogs must endure harsh winters and hot summers.
