CWDHS students make 150 count with the help of RBC

January 9, 2017

FERGUS, Ontario – In December, the IDC4U Student Council Leadership students at Centre Wellington District High School were given the opportunity to make a difference in their community.

The Royal Bank of Canada wants to make Canada’s 150th anniversary count. Through the RBC Make 150 Count campaign, RBC is inspiring thousands of young Canadians across the country to make a difference in their communities. This campaign provides Canadians with $150, no strings attached, to positively impact their community.

Students at CWDHS divided themselves into small groups and created presentations about what they would do if they were given $150 to make a difference. Students presented as if this were a hypothetical situation. It was not until the winning group was chosen that it was revealed to students that RBC was providing them with $150.

The students that won presented their idea for a “Beary Christmas.” These students proposed the idea of making homemade teddy bears and giving them to the residents at Wellington Terrace, a long-term care home near Fergus. The idea behind this presentation was that some of the residents may not have regular visitors during the holiday season and that a teddy bear would bring them cheer. With the help of the fashion class, the students sewed 100 teddy bears.

On December 23, the students delivered the teddy bears to the residents at Wellington Terrace. Students met with the residents and personally gave each of them a teddy bear. Students received hugs, tears of happiness, smiles and laughter. Students and staff were pleased to be able to make such an impact in their community.
