Elementary students bring home gold from Skills Ontario competition

GUELPH, Ontario – Several groups of Upper Grand District School Board elementary students were in Toronto on May 6-8 for the provincial Skills Ontario competition.
Every year after the regional Skills Canada competition, qualifying UGDSB students in grades 4-8 get the opportunity to compete with elementary students from across the province.
Challenges at the event included Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Character Animation, TV/Video Production, Health and Safety, Design and Build, Construction, Green Energy and Vex Robotics.
UGDSB students at the event did very well during the competition and made their schools and board proud.
The following placements are for Upper Grand DSB students:
- Health and Safety – Dennis and Thomas placed 10th
- Character Animation – Charles, Quinn, Jenna and Zoe placed 8th
- Lego Mechanics – Kayleigh, Mason, Emily and Erik placed 7th
- Character Animation – Sara, Emily, Julia and Jessie placed 6th
- Green Energies – Joel, Evan, Nicolas and Declan placed 4th
- TV/Video Production – Angie and Rachel placed 4th
- Vex IQ Crossover – Porter, Owen, Phoenix and Alex placed 1st
The group of students that placed first in the Vex IQ Crossover event are from Maryborough PS and won in the intermediate category even though they are all juniors, beating out 15 other teams for the 1st place title.
