Employers and youth connect at 2nd annual Youth Employment Opportunity Fair

May 25, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – Hundreds of students who are hoping to get a jump-start on entering the workforce had the chance to meet with local employers this week.

On May 24, approximately 400 eager job seekers from across the Upper Grand District School Board attended the Youth Employment Opportunity Fair.

The employment fair is a partnership between the UGDSB, UGDSB Specialist High Skills Major program, Wellington Catholic DSB, Career Education Council, and Second Chance Employment.

Now in its second year, the YEOF has already seen impressive growth. The event had to move to a larger venue this year and the number of local employers who participated grew from 40 to 60.

One of the benefits of the event is that it gives students a unique opportunity to meet with local employers, learn about their organizations, hand in resumes and potentially get hired. This year’s event also featured tables in the centre of the room reserved for filling out applications and interviews.

The local employers were really engaged with the students and our community, many who participated this year had directly hired students from last year’s YEOF.

The hope is that these students in grades 11 and 12 will make connections that lead to entry level positions, and eventually lead to meaningful careers.

Participating employers included the Stratford Chefs School, the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, the Rhyze Project, Team Group Industrial Cleaning Services, Hanlon Convention Centre, CGL Manufacturing, Roto-Mill, Royal Distributing and more.

The turnout and energy in the room was fantastic, thank you to all the employers who participated in the event!
