GUELPH, Ontario — Grade 9 math students in the Upper Grand District School Board continue to surpass the provincial average in test results released by the province’s Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO). Results in both the academic and applied program have topped the province’s scores over the past five years.

In the applied program, 52% of students in Upper Grand schools passed the test, compared with 44% provincially. While this is down one percent over the previous year, it is still well above the provincial average, which remained unchanged from the previous year.

In the academic program Upper Grand students were 87% successful, compared with 84% provincially. These two scores remain unchanged from the past year’s testing.

Boys outnumbered girls in the applied program and they achieved a 53% success rate, compared with 49% for the girls. On the academic side girls outnumbered boys, and achieved at 86%, while the boys had 89% success.

Students with special needs (excluding gifted) achieved at 43% in the applied program while those studying academic math had a rate of 80% success.

“We are proud of our success in math,” said Mark Bailey, Chair of the board, “but we can always improve. There’s a lot of data to analyse at the school and board level, and this will help us identify instructional practices that work.”

“The Student Success Numeracy group, math department heads and our secondary curriculum leaders will be planning ways to increase students’ success so we can move forward.”

School by school results for both the academic and applied programs are included.

Additional information is posted on the board’s website at www.ugdsb.ca/eqao and on EQAO’s website at www.eqao.com.

Note: results for English language learners (ELL) are not included in online reports due to suppression rules, as there are fewer than 11 students in this category in both academic and applied math.
