Food for Thought: Primrose ES launches healthy salad bar

February 14, 2017

MULMUR, Ontario – Primrose Elementary School has launched a healthy new initiative for students to enjoy – the Primrose Salad Bar.

Well-nourished brains are primed for learning, so this program is truly “food for thought.” The school’s program will feature fresh, local, seasonal foods with multiple options for grain, protein, vegetables and fruits – all wholesome foods that will set students up to learn.

In addition to the food service, Primrose’s program also involves food literacy education and community engagement with visits from local growers and cooks. Some intermediate students will be conducting surveys of student preferences to make sure the salad bar is a success at the school. Primrose is also welcoming parent input and volunteers as well.

Service to students kicked off at first nutrition break on Valentine’s Day, to show the school’s love for healthy, local food. As the school year unfolds, staff will ramp up service and introduce online payments for the salad bar.

School staff was delighted with the number of students who said they couldn’t wait to have the salad bar, after seeing the teachers receive the first trial service in January. The school said it has been great to see such enthusiasm for the program and looks forward to serving the many eager veggie-eaters!

Primrose’s new salad bar program is made possible through a generous grant from Farm to Cafeteria Canada, which will help them purchase equipment, promotional items and engage local food professionals to enhance food literacy. They have lots of fun plans in store for getting students and teachers involved, planning menu themes and even growing some of the food themselves.
