GCVI hosts first Jazz Education Day in partnership with Mohawk College

March 5, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – Music Students from many Upper Grand District School Board schools and other school boards embarked on the first ever Jazz Education Day hosted by Guelph CVI.

UGDSB schools in attendance included Guelph CVI, Centennial CVI, Westside SS, John F. Ross CVI, Centre Wellington DHS, and Orangeville DSS.

This event was held in partnership with Mohawk College and allowed students to hear about the music program at Mohawk, learn from Mohawk students and explore possible post-secondary educational pathways.

The day started with a performance and demonstration from the Mohawk student group, a lesson about the history of jazz and a look at the jazz functions courses available to students if they were to attend Mohawk College.

Through the day, students had the opportunity to breakout into three sessions, rhythm, brass and woodwind, and work with specialists in their instrument areas and learn how they can build on their instrumental skills in the jazz style.

At the end of the day, students from all schools and Mohawk College worked as a team and performed a final piece.
