GCVI student wins OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award

June 22, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – A grade 12 student at Guelph CVI has won an award that celebrates exceptional student-athletes in Ontario.

Megan Harron has been awarded OFSAA’s Character Athlete Award for 2017. Each year, OFSAA selects just one female and one male student for the honour, something they say is never easy.

OFSAA said this year’s recipients stood out for their commitment to the values of leadership, equity, respect and sportsmanship.

Megan captains the GCVI hockey and softball team and plays on the field hockey team. In softball, she was also a player-coach and acted as team manager. Her nominator said that Megan’s skill as a hockey player translates into the rest of her life, where she leads by example.

Megan’s involvement at school goes well beyond the sporting world.

She’s served as Athletic Council President, acted as a peer coach for fellow students at the Special Olympics. She has served as Co-Chair for GCVI’s Horizons Leadership Conference and Youth Empowerment initiative. She was also a student ambassador for the Fit Spirit program, which teaches girls the value of leading a healthy life, and the Wellness Retreat, which focused on ‘non-traditional wellness’ and mental health. Student Senate, fundraising and volunteering are just a few of the other things Megan dedicates her time to.

In the words of her nominator for the OFSAA award, “Megan believes in empowering young women to take control by living mentally and physically healthy lives…Megan is someone you can count on to represent the school in a positive manner in all situations and is truly deserving of this award.”

Following graduation, Megan will head off to Carleton University in the fall to study Social Work, with hopes of minoring in Disability Studies.

Congratulations Megan!
