Gr. 9 CCVI student honoured at Canadian Mathematical Olympiad

May 11, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – A student from Centennial CVI has been recognized at a distinguished national mathematics contest.

CCVI’s Andy Dong recently received an Honourable Mention at the 50th Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO).

Nearly 90 students from 50 different schools participated in the competition this March.

Students were selected to participate in the CMO based largely on their performance on the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Qualifying Repêchage. Andy was among 31 students at CCVI to participate in the COMC. He had the top score in the school and his results were in the 97.56th percentile of all writers.

What’s even more remarkable is that Andy is in grade 9 – these mathematics contests are typically geared toward senior students.

“The students who succeed on the CMO have accomplished something remarkable,” said Canadian Mathematical Olympiad Committee Chair Professor Neal Madras. “They display impressive mathematical ability and insight. A hard Olympiad problem is a challenge even for most math professors.”

Congratulations Andy!
