GUELPH, Ontario — Two Guelph schools are finalists in a national competition to win a customized $20,000 outdoor classroom – and they want your vote.

Victory Public School and Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute are competing against eight other Canadian schools in a contest sponsored by the Majesta brand of household paper products.

The school that receives the most online votes will be the winner.

Schools entering the competition were asked to submit a design showing what their outdoor classroom would look like.

At Guelph CVI, the planned classroom will be an open shelter with a living roof. It will also act as a shelter for bicycles, and will have water run off to an overflow pond with water sensitive plants. Natural rocks will be used for seating and the site will also act as the information center, displaying over 100 labeled tree species.

Victory P.S. would use the prize money to extend the Playground Greening Project, a multi-phased plan to rejuvenate their 92-year-old schoolyard. The school has already planted a grove of trees, and created an “imagination station”. In 2012 they want to tackle the schoolyard’s hill, building an outdoor amphitheatre, slides, a climbing area, “rain gardens” and a hilltop area to enjoy nature.

Entrants can vote once a day until November 4, and will also be eligible to win a $10,000 prize for themselves. Visit www.majesta.com
