Principal/Vice Principal Transfers and Appointments

Congratulations to the following staff:

Lee Street (formerly Stockford) PS Boundary Review

Trustees approved the commencement of a Boundary Review process to establish a boundary for the school that will be built on the Lee Street site in East Guelph. The school is expected to open in 2014. The school will ease the overcrowding at Ken Danby PS which is expected to have an overcapacity of approximately 300 students with the introduction of Full day Kindergarten (FDK) in September 2013.

The school is also in an area of continuing growth. An interim plan to accommodate all students currently in the Ken Danby catchment area will be required until the new Lee Street school opens. A staff Boundary Review Committee will develop alternative scenarios and provide a list of recommended option(s) for the new school’s boundary at the March 20 Business Operations Committee, and a public meeting will follow on March 22 to provide the community with an opportunity for input. The final Boundary Review Report will be considered at the board’s Business Operations Committee meeting May 8, 2012, with a final decision made May 22. Please see the separate release issued earlier this week. The first Boundary Review Report is posted on the board’s website at www.ugdsb.ca/lee

MicoFIT Solar Photovoltaic Installations

The board has approved the continuation of a project to install MicroFit Solar Photovoltaic systems on area elementary schools. During the tendering for the pilot project, which will see panels installed on JD Hogarth, James McQueen, Elora, Victoria Cross and Arthur public schools, the costs of obtaining such systems was found to be reduced by approximately $10,000 per unit. As a result, the board will consider installations of these systems on other elementary schools where deemed feasible and if funding permits. The board originally submitted 57 elementary schools to the government’s application process and these are being processed.

Concept Design for new Shelburne Public School

The Concept Design for a new elementary school in the Town of Shelburne was approved by the Board. The new school, with a capacity of 426 pupil places, will ease enrolment pressures in the community that are expected to continue for at least 10 years. Working with the Town of Shelburne and the Shelburne District Agricultural Society, the board has obtained a suitable site and approvals for building are being obtained. With Hyland Heights ES expected to be 250-300 students over capacity in September 2012, staff brought the design forward to expedite the work. The concept design is a modified repeat of Westminster Woods PS in Guelph with a preliminary budget of $6.9 million. The architectural firm for the project is Moffet and Duncan. While the board previously approved a single User Advisory Committee to help determine the design for the school, this is not possible due to time constraints. As a result, a public meeting will be held in on February 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the Café at Centre Dufferin DHS to present the design and obtain the community’s comments which will be incorporated in the new school’s design if feasible.

Boundary Review Approved for New Public School in Shelburne

A boundary review that will set the catchment area for the new school approved for the Town of Shelburne will commence immediately. Report # 2, which will provide alternate scenarios and a recommended boundary will be developed by the staff committee and presented to the board for consideration at the May meeting of the board’s Business Operations Committee. A public information session will be held in the Town of Shelburne on May 10, with Report # 3 developed following input from the community. A final decision will be made by the board at its June 26 Board meeting. Please see the release sent earlier this week for additional details. The initial boundary review report is posted on the board’s website at www.ugdsb.ca/shel

Appointment to the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)

Carrie Proudfoot, a member in good standing of the Wellington Chapter of Autism Ontario, has been appointed as the association’s alternate delegate. She joins the chapter’s delegate Sue Shaw at SEAC.

The next regular monthly meeting of the Upper Grand District School board will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Guelph office, 500 Victoria Road North. Everyone is welcome to attend.
