MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
January 31, 2013

GUELPH, Ontario: The January 2013 regular monthly board meeting was held on January 29. The following provides highlights from the meeting.

New South Guelph JK-Grade 8 French Immersion Centre Boundary Review

Trustees received Report 2 of the New South Guelph JK-Grade 8 FI Centre Boundary Review. The school, expected to open in September 2014, is located on Zaduk Place in South Guelph. The Staff Boundary Review Committee has developed two scenarios, considers both viable, and prefers scenario 2. The full report is posted on the Board’s website at www.ugdsb.ca/sgbr. In a comparison of the two scenarios, which highlights both the advantages and disadvantages of both, the boundary created will relieve enrolment pressure at John McCrae, Paisley Road and F.A. Hamilton public schools. A media release, posted on the Board’s website, outlines the additional changes to the boundaries as proposed by staff. The Business Operations Committee meeting on March 19 will be provided with the final Boundary Review Report, with the Board making a final decision at the monthly meeting on March 26. Delegation opportunities are available at these meetings. The final report will be posted on the board’s website on March 8, 2013.

Concept Design – New Orangeville Public School

The concept design for the new JK-Grade 8 school to be built in the Settler’s Creek area was approved by the Board. Designed by Allen & Sherriff, to be built by lump sum tender and open in September 2014 has a projected expenditure budget of $6.198 million. The single and two-story structure is designed for 308 students, and has potential for expansion, as necessary. The school has 10 regular classrooms, three purpose built Kindergarten rooms, a two story gym and a main floor single story library.

The user advisory group met in December to provide input into the design and site plan.

New Public School – Rockwood

The board approved the building of a new public school in Rockwood, to open as close to September 2014 as possible. The elementary program (JK to Grade 6 or JK-Grade 8) has not yet been determined. A repeat design of the Settler’s Creek school, with modifications by Allen & Sherriff Architects, is proposed to save time and generate efficiencies. A total of $6.098 million is the target budget. A media release was provided earlier this month and is posted on the board’s website.

Guelph trustee Susan Moziar was appointed to the Budget Liaison Committee. The other members include Vice Chair Marty Fairbairn (Chair) and trustees Jennifer Waterston and Bruce Schieck.
