Highlights of the May 2013 board meeting

GUELPH, Ontario:  The Upper Grand District School Board held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 28, 2013. The following are highlights from the meeting.

Secondary Principal/Vice-principal Transfers and Appointments

Instrumental Music at Elora P.S.

Lloyd Phillipps, Chair of the School Council expressed concern from parents about the potential loss of the school’s instrumental music program due to staffing concerns. A letter from the principal indicates that the staffing process will continue and the school is working to provide a dynamic music program at the school in the coming year.

Sir Isaac Brock Grade 7-8 Feasibility Study

Six parents from Rickson Ridge and Sir Isaac Brock delegated the board about the current feasibility study that is investigating the development of a grade 7-8 program at Sir Isaac Brock Public School. Currently students graduate from Sir Isaac Brock to attend grade 7 and 8 at Rickson Ridge. Peter McAlpine spoke about the need to maintain the program at Rickson Ridge. Parents from Sir Isaac Brock – Renee Chumbley, Paul McDonald, Pam Greenwood, Teresa Barras and Cindy Gibson – outlined the desire of the parents for students to stay at Sir Isaac Brock for grades 7 and 8. Trustees will make a final decision at the June 25 Board meeting.

Name of New School Confirmed

Trustees confirmed that the re-built school on Laurine Avenue will be named John Galt Public School. The school will open in September 2013 and house students from the former Laurine Avenue school who have been attending the King George Holding School and Tytler P.S. 

Student Trustee Appointed

Kelly Dong, a student at Centennial CVI was appointed by the board as the new student trustee to represent the Upper Grand’s urban schools for the coming year. Kelly joins student trustee Kaitlin Brown from Wellington Heights SS at the Board table. 

Interim Financial Reporting

Trustees were provided with the board’s financial position as at March 31, 2013. Enrolment confirmed at March 31 was up over last year’s budget by 136 students (average daily enrolment). The board spent 57.7% of its annual budget by March 31, with spending of 57.6% on the same date in the previous year.

New South Guelph School

Tenders closed on the new school to be built in South Guelph on Zaduk Place. The final project budget is $7.4 million and the school will be built by Tambro Construction, the low bidder in the process. The school will house French Immersion students and open in September 2014.

New Orangeville School

Tenders also closed on the school to be built in the Settlers’ Creek area of the Town of Orangeville. Tambro Construction was the low bidder. The final project budget of $6.3 million is over the target budget, but the school is being built with the core areas large enough to house more students when an addition is needed. It is anticipated to open in September 2014.

Canadian School Boards’ Association Conference (CSBA)

Mark Bailey will be provided with up to $1,250 to cover expenses so he can attend the CSBA Annual Conference in Vancouver this summer. His registration expenses will be covered by OPSBA. 

2013-14 School Year Budget Meetings

The final meeting in June will consider the board’s annual school year budget (2013-2014). Budget meetings are scheduled as follows. All meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Guelph Office.

The next regular monthly meeting of the Board will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 in the Board Room at the Guelph Board Office beginning at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. This is the final meeting before the summer break, with meetings resuming on August 27, 2013.
