Highlights of the September 2012 board meeting

The September meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on Tuesday, September 25, 2012. The following are highlights of the meeting.

Director’s Performance Appraisal

Trustees voted unanimously to approve the Director’s Annual Performance Review citing Martha Rogers and as an exceptional leader with provincial respect and dedication to student learning.

Mark Bailey Elected Second Vice-president of OPSBA

Mark Bailey, trustee for Guelph (Wards 1 and 5) and Vice Chair of the board was elected as Second Vice President of the Ontario Public School Board’s Association (OPSBA) at a meeting held on September 22. Bailey, who served as Regional Vice President for OPSBA during the last two years joins new President, Michael Barrett of the Durham District School Board and First Vice-President Lori Lukinuk of the Lakehead District School Board. The election was held as a result of the resignation of OPSBA’s former President, Catherine Fife, who was elected as an NDP MPP in the Kitchener-Waterloo by-election held earlier this month. Additional information will be provided in another release.

New South Guelph School Boundary Review

Trustees confirmed a decision made at September’s Business Operations Committee meeting to initiate a boundary review process for a new South Guelph school to be located on Zaduk Place. The school will be a French Immersion (FI) Centre housing FI students in JK to grade 8.The school is anticipated to open in 2014. Report #1 of the boundary review is posted on the board’s website at www.ugdsb.ca/sgbr. 

Summit on Children’s Mental Health

Trustees Moziar and Fairbairn will attend the provincial Summit on Children’s Mental Health to be held October 25 and 26, 2012.

Trustee Appointments to Environmental Issues and Management Committee

Trustees Cooper and Busuttil were appointed to serve on the board’s Environmental Issues and Management Policy Committee.

Policy Management

Two board policies were rescinded as they are no longer necessary: Policy # 402 Safe Workplaces and Learning Environments, and Policy #206 Violence Free Schools. Required elements of Policy #206 will be included in Policy #503 Student Discipline, Bullying Prevention and Intervention (the board’s safe schools policy). Policies #408 Harassment in the Workplace and #417 Violence in the Workplace replace Policy #402. These two policies were also revised and approved. Revisions to the Violent Incident Report From were also received by trustees. Policies on the Selection of Principals and Vice-Principals (#404) and Transfers and Appointments of Principals and Vice-Principals (#405) were revised and adopted. All policies will be posted on the board’s website.

Interim Financial Report

Superintendent of Business Janice Wright provided trustees with the third and final Interim Financial Report to August 31, 2012. The report provides a comparison of the year-to-date spending of the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years and show that the operating budget spending is on track.

Attendance at conference approved

Trustees approved the attendance for one day of Chair Bob Borden at the upcoming Educational Computing Organization Of Ontario (ECOO) Conference to be held October 24-26, 2012.

Change in Date for King George Boundary Review Public Information Session

Due to a conflict with Commencement at College Heights Secondary School, trustees requested that the date of the public information session for the King George JK-8 FI Boundary Review, originally scheduled for Thursday, October 18 be changed, if possible, to Tuesday October 23.

The next regular monthly meeting of the board will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Guelph Board Office. Everyone is welcome to attend
