Island Lake class makes trip to Indigenous Education Center

September 25, 2023

Orangeville, ON — Students at Island Lake Public School make their first visit of the year to the Upper Grand’s Outdoor Education Centre, at Island Lake Conservation Area – to learn about local Indigenous culture, history and sport.

Grade eight teacher, Stacey Manzerolle, said that her students got the opportunity to learn about the different First Nations which make up the Six Nations or the Haudenosaunee as well as their history in becoming a community along the Grand River as well as; Indigenous arts and games.

Manzerolle’s class got to spend the day learning from Dallas Squire – retired professional Lacrosse player from the Mohawk nation. We learned about games which Indigenous people play including a skill game where you try to hook a circle of bone tied to a small stick as many times in succession as possible,” said Manzerolle.

Manzerolle said that her students took away a lot from their experience at the education center and left with the understanding that Indigenous Peoples have been here long before anyone else settled here.
