‘Join the cause, let’s help Aus!’ Students at Harris Mill PS raise funds for Australia

January 20, 2020

ROCKWOOD, Ontario – Grade 5 and 6 students at Harris Mill Public School have been busy fundraising to support Australia amidst the on-going bushfire emergency.

Earlier this month, teacher Emily Loewen taught her students about current events and one of the current events that resonated with students was the Australian bushfires.

Students presented Ms. Loewen with a series of “I wonder” questions about the fires, so she reached out to someone she knew who has experience with wildfires. After learning more about wildfires, students began to question what they could do to help. One student decided a fundraiser was needed to help Australia and began to organize her entire class for this fundraiser.

As a class, students researched the possible charities they could donate to and narrowed it down to two. Unable to decide they decided to fundraise for Wildlife Victoria and FindaBed.

Wildlife Victoria is an organization that helps animals and wildlife impacted by the wildfires. FindaBed is an organization that houses people who have been evacuated from their homes and need a safe and comfortable place to stay.

After putting their math skills to work, students decided that if everyone in the school brought in $2, they could raise a good amount of money for Australia.

Students created advertisements to post in the school, wrote morning and classroom announcements and wrote an insert for the school newsletter. Students even came up with a slogan for their campaign, “Join the cause, let’s help Aus!” Students are continuing their fundraising efforts by discussing what they can do in February to keep fundraising.

After only two days of collection, students have raised $407.

Students at Harris Mill PS are not the only students in the UGDSB who want to help raise money for Australia:
