June Avenue PS gives back this holiday season while promoting sustainability

December 14, 2023

GUELPH, ON – Inspired by other Upper Grand District School Board elementary schools, June Avenue Public School’s Helping Hands Club decided to host an event this year to raise money for the Guelph Food Bank while promoting sustainability in their community.

This student led initiative involved students planning a holiday market at their school. The Helping Hands Club advertised for gently used items to be donated to the holiday market. Once items were available, the market opened. Every item at the market was available for purchase for $2.00. Students and staff were all invited to the learning commons where the market was set up in sections just like a retail store.

Students said that the market was a great experience because it allowed them to buy gifts for their family members, while keeping the gift a surprise. According to June Avenue PS teacher Andrew Campbell, the market gave “the kids full autonomy over their choices!”

The event was a huge success and saw the school donate $1,200 to the Guelph Food Bank.

Great job, June Avenue PS Helping Hands Club!
