King George kindies make capes for kids battling cancer

February 16, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Students at École King George Public School are making capes to help support real life superheroes.

The kindergarten students are sewing capes to donate to Kick-It Capes, an initiative of the Happy Soul Project that gives out capes to children battling cancer.

Originally, the students were making capes with paper and masking tape. Teachers Karla Riddle and Nicole Shortreed then came up with a plan to help the students sew actual capes. With the help of parent volunteer Leslie Porter and the support of parent donations, students designed and sewed capes that will be mailed to children in hospital.

Kick-It Capes is an initiative by Tara MaCallan, a mother and blogger behind the Happy Soul Project. MaCallan started Kick-It Capes after learning her best friend’s little boy had cancer. She said she felt helpless but wanted to do something. She asked her blog’s community members to make or donate capes. MaCallan says more than 400 capes have been given out to children around the world.

The capes made by students at King George PS will help support not only the kids battling cancer, but also any child who needs “an extra dose of super-hero strength,” including children with other serious illnesses and the brothers and sisters who are facing their own challenges coping with having a sibling who is sick.
