Kortright Hills PS students place 3rd in Ontario’s Waste-Free Lunch Challenge

February 6, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – A group of dedicated environmentalists in the Upper Grand DSB are being recognized for their work in reducing waste at their school.

The grade 5 ‘Water Rockers’ at Kortright Hills Public School won third place in the Recycling Council of Ontario’s (RCO) annual Waste-Free Lunch Challenge.

During the challenge, students commit to bringing waste-free lunches every day, and schools audit how much garbage the lunches produce. The goal of the challenge is to help schools in Ontario reduce the amount of garbage they produce and educate school communities on waste reduction. Students and staff have to be as litterless as possible and perform daily weigh-ins of their garbage, recycling, and composting. The data gets sent into the RCO along with a brief description of what impact the challenge had on the class and about the eco initiatives that the class is involved with.

For their efforts, the Kortright Hills students won a prize of $250 to go toward upcoming eco projects. The Water Rockers are 24 students who have embraced the notion of environmental citizenship. They have started a school composting program, run the school’s recycling program, make morning announcements, classroom presentations and posters, in the hopes of educating their school community. These have also done research to prove that sorting the recycling, composting and garbage properly makes an enormous difference.

Way to go, Water Rockers!
