Laurelwoods ES receives ukulele grant

June 7, 2023

AMARANTH, ON – Laurelwoods Elementary School was recently announced the winner of the 2023 Royal City Ukulele Ensemble grant.

The goal of this grant is to help students get ukuleles and teach them how to start making music. The Royal City Ukulele Ensemble brings together like-minded individuals to create music using ukuleles. As part of their group, they raise funds through community performances to help bring the instruments into schools.

After a difficult decision due to many applicants, the Royal City Ukulele Ensemble was thrilled to announce that Laurelwoods ES would receive the school donation this year.  According to Laurelwoods ES teacher Andra Popa, their application focused on the need for music resources at the school and what they planned to do with these resources, including learning buddies, mental health initiatives and a ukulele club.

This grant includes 30 quality soprano ukuleles and gig bags from manufacturer and family-owned business, Ohana Music in Long Beach, California. They will also receive access to digital method books and a one-year subscription to the Teacher Toolkit resource that provides extra support for teaching and leading this methodology. The grant also includes a one-hour session Cynthia Kinnunen, who has been a clinician for James Hill in his teacher training program and a music educator using ukulele for over a decade.

Congratulations Laurelwoods ES, we can’t wait to hear what music you create.
