GUELPH, Ontario —  Students from Upper Grand and Wellington Catholic District School Board secondary schools are participating in the 2011 Regional Technological Skills Competitions between March 24 and March 31 at various sites around the district.

More than 165 students from the two school boards have entered 35 different competitions in areas as diverse as baking to precision machining, hairstyling to cabinetmaking.  The program is coordinated though the boards’ Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, (OYAP) which prepares students for further education and careers in the skilled trades.

While there are competitions in 23 different areas, there are at least 11 other events such as Robotics – Team of 4 and Mechanical CADD where only one school chooses to enter.  These teams do not have to compete in the Regional Skills but go on directly to the provincial competitions.

The award ceremony for the Regional Competitions is being held on Thursday March 31 at the E. L. Fox Auditorium at John F. Ross CVI, Meyer Drive, Guelph at 3:00 p.m.

The Ontario Technological Skills Competitions, where winning students from Upper Grand and Wellington Catholic schools will compete with more than 1,800 elementary, secondary and post-secondary students from across the province will be held May 2 through 4 at RIM Park in Waterloo.
