GUELPH, Ontario — Guelph trustee Mark Bailey was re-elected Central West Regional Vice-president of the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) at the organization’s Annual General Meeting held June 9, 2012 in Thunder Bay. OPSBA represents public school boards and school authorities that serve 1.3 million students across the province.

Presently Vice-chair of the Upper Grand District School Board, Mark Bailey was first elected as a public school trustee in 2006 to represent the city Wards 1, 5 and 6. He was returned to office in 2010 for another four-year term.

Bailey began contributing his time to OPSBA not long after his election as a school trustee. As chair of the editorial advisory board of “Education Today”, the organization’s thrice-yearly magazine, he is well acquainted with the wide range of issues and innovative ideas for education in Ontario.

He has also been a member of the provincial public school trustee association’s Education Program Work Group and was co-chair of OPSBA’s Information and Communications Technology Committee which authored “What If – Technology in the 21st Century Classroom”.

“My livelihood and passion revolves around technology, but what’s important is how these new tools get used in the classroom,” said Bailey. “Do they engage students? Do they stimulate learning? How do we support teachers who are at the forefront of rapid technological change?”

At the board table Bailey has also been a vocal supporter of environmental initiatives at Upper Grand, speaking up for projects such as environmental learning centres and solar energy installations. He is also committed to progress on youth mental health issues.

“My involvement with OPSBA stems from the belief that many of the issues we face are not unique to Upper Grand, and that we can accomplish much more by working collaboratively with other boards.”

OPSBA’s Central West Region includes the Upper Grand board, the District School Board of Niagara, the Grand Erie, Halton, Hamilton Wentworth, Waterloo Region and Peel DSBs, as well as the Kid’s Ability and Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre school authorities. Regional meetings are held at least twice a year.

OPSBA members also acclaimed Catherine Fife, a trustee and Chair of the Waterloo Region District School Board, as President at its Annual General Meeting.
