Maryborough students support local food bank at ‘Shop with a Cop’ event

December 15, 2015

Students at Maryborough Public School had a chance to support a local charity, all while spending time with local police officers and firefighters – and sneaking in a math lesson while they were at it.

On Dec. 9, grade 6 students participated in the “Shop with a Cop” program. The event, organized by members of the school, Moorefield Optimist Club and the local fire department, is one that the community looks forward to every year.

Students were driven to the Drayton Foodmarket in OPP cruisers and Mapleton Fire Department trucks, complete with lights flashing and sirens blaring.

Once they arrived, students were split up into groups of 2 to 3, each group teamed up with an officer or firefighter. Groups were sent into the store on a shopping challenge: purchase healthy items that are in need at the local Food Bank, without going over their allotted $100.

Students were encouraged to shop keeping in mind unit prices and were not allowed to use a calculator to tally up their purchases – pencil and paper only. They also discussed how different items are taxed and how to add on tax to your purchase. The winning group spent $99.87 at the checkout.

The money for the shopping challenge, $1,400 in total, was donated by the Moorefield Optimist club along with other groups from the community.

Following the shopping challenge, everyone involved pushed the grocery carts loaded with food over to the Drayton Food Bank and unloaded the items.
