Math homework help at your fingertips

GUELPH, Ontario — If you’re a parent worried about how to support your child’s math homework questions, don’t worry! An exciting online initiative designed to help students succeed in mathematics is now available for grade 7 to 10 students in the Upper Grand District School Board.
The Ministry of Education and the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) have launched Homework Help – free, online math tutoring available five evenings a week. Students simply log-on at homeworkhelp.ilc.org and, by using an interactive chat room, they can obtain personalized tutoring from a certified Ontario math teacher. Chats can take place anytime on Sunday to Thursday between the hours of 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. Homework Help is free, live and confidential.
Online, interactive math resources are also available at this same site to support students. Resources include lessons on the most commonly asked math questions, interactive math tutorials, a scientific calculator, glossary of math terms and highlights of previous math tutoring sessions.
Erin Kelly, Superintendent of Education, notes, “Just over half of the students in grade nine applied math in the Upper Grand District School Board are not meeting the Provincial Standard (EQAO results, 2009-10). This pilot program can help these students – and all students – succeed in mathematics.”
One student who already made use of the site attested, “Wow! I was amazed at this service, it really helps when you need quick help, the tutors are patient and are very nice. LOVE IT!”
