GUELPH, Ontario — The 2013 recipient of the Mike Elrick Environmental Leadership Award is Cory Lipovschek, a guidance counselor at Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute.

This the fourth year the UGDSB Environmental Issues Committee has honoured the memory of the late Mike Elrick with an award for staff or volunteers who have demonstrated environmental leadership within their school community or our school board.

Cory Lipovschek is an environmental champion at CCVI, where he is the staff advisor for the Global Outreach Club, organizes Earth Week, and is a leader in recycling and waste reduction initiatives. He is frequently seen taking out the recycling totes himself on Tuesday mornings.

Cory has also been a force behind greening Centennial’s grounds and creating an “outdoor classroom” in the courtyard at the heart of the school.

For the past two years, Cory has worked tirelessly to motivate staff and students to make Centennial the first secondary school to be awarded Gold EcoSchool status in the UGDSB.

From riding his bike to school to meticulously saving one-sided paper to copy his course handouts, Cory is obviously dedicated to lightening his footprint and inspires staff and students to do the same. “Cory is environmentalism in action,” said one of his nominators. “It is as natural to him as breathing.”
