Minister of Education says teacher deal is workable

GUELPH, Ontario – A tentative agreement between the Upper Grand District School Board and secondary teachers is a workable solution, according to Laurel Broten, Minister of Education.

“Following an initial review of the tentative agreements between Upper Grand District School Board and York Region District School Board and OSSTF locals, I am pleased to say that they are workable within the scope of the substantively identical test under the Putting Students First Act,” said Broten in a statement.

It is expected that school board trustees will vote on the deal at their regular board meeting on November 27.

It is not known when OSSTF will put the deal to a vote among their local membership.

Once the agreement has been ratified by both the board and OSSTF it will be forwarded to the Minister of Education for final approval.

The deal between the Board and secondary school teachers was reached on Saturday, November 17. Teachers suspended sanctions that had begun the previous Monday.

In other developments, the Board announced this morning that it had also reached a tentative agreement with Educational Assistants (EA), Early Childhood Educators (ECE) and Special Program Assistants (SPA). That agreement has been forwarded to the Minister for review.

The Board is continuing to negotiate with other local bargaining units:

Elementary teachers are not in a legal strike position, but have been urged by their union leadership to “take a pause” on voluntary activities. Sanctions by OSSTF support staff without a tentative agreement are ongoing.
