MVPS student recognized during province-wide battery recycling challenge

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – A student at Montgomery Village Public School is being celebrated for her efforts during the school’s battery recycling campaign.
Jillian is one of MVPS’s ‘battery bosses’ – kids who have taken the lead during the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge (OSBRC).
The OSBRC is presented by Raw Materials Company Inc. (RMC), which works on solutions for responsibly managing consumer batteries in ways that are environmentally sustainable and economical.
Every year, students in elementary and secondary schools across the province participate in the challenge – 125 schools in Ontario, including MVPS, registered this year.
The OSBRC starts on the first day of Waste Reduction Week in October and ends on the Friday before Earth Day (April 20, 2018).
In that time, students participate in various challenges focused on increasing education, awareness and action around battery recycling.
Missions include making a battery recycling container, creating a battery recycling poster for their school, collecting batteries for recycling, and asking friends and family to complete a battery recycling survey to increase awareness and education of the issue.
Students who completed all five missions by Family Day were eligible for a special draw, and this year, Jillian was the winner of the Family Day Prize Draw.
On Monday, Sarah Lacharity of RMC, along with her friend Wiley the Wolf from Great Wolf Lodge, paid a special visit to Montgomery Village PS to present Jillian with a family stay at Great Wolf Lodge.
This is MVPS’s fourth year participating in the challenge. In that time, the school has recycled more than 66,000 batteries, diverting reusable materials from community landfills.
