October is Walk to School Month – here’s how to participate safely

October 1, 2020

GUELPH, Ontario – All year round, the school board encourages students and families to celebrate active travel by walking, rolling and wheeling to and from school.

For this year’s International Walk to School Month, which is an annual global celebration of active transportation held every October, the UGDSB is sharing tips for COVID-safe active travel.

Students and families are encouraged to walk/roll to school while remaining physically distanced from others – this includes our school crossing guards! Remember to keep a safe distance when waiting at intersections. Masks can be worn when physical distancing is not possible.

If you have to drive to school, instead of going the whole way by car, park the car five minutes away and walk the rest. When you “Drive to 5” you help reduce congestion at school sites and get the benefit of physical activity. Many UGDSB schools have maps on their website that show where parents can park in the neighbourhood and then walk the remaining 5 or 10 minutes to school.

Don’t forget that UGDSB schools have new procedures in place for accessing school grounds, including drop-off and pick-up procedures, so remember to follow your school’s procedures.
