Principals raise $6,000 for school nutrition programs through Beards4Breakfasts campaign

December 15, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – Five elementary principals in the Upper Grand District School Board set out with a goal this fall – to raise $5,000 for the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington’s Food & Friends program.

Principals Ken Keesmaat (Taylor Evans PS), David Marquis (Guelph Lake PS), Randal Wagner (Paisley Road PS), Mike Anderson (Brant Avenue PS), and Chris Popofski (Gateway Drive PS), set out on a mission. The promise was that they would keep growing out their beards until their fundraising goal was met.

5 principals in the UGDSB raised more than $6,000 for the Food & Friends program, through their Beards4Breakfasts campaign.

In less than two months, the fundraising goal was met and exceeded, thanks to the support of UGDSB families, staff and community members.

On Friday, all five principals were at Guelph Lake PS for a celebration and beard-shaving event.

With the help of their students, the whiskers are gone and a cheque worth $5,940 was donated to the Food & Friends program. Additional donations kept coming in Friday, putting the total over $6,000.

Food & Friends is a fantastic program that runs throughout the UGDSB. It provides funding and support for school breakfast, snack and lunch programs, which ensure all students are nourished and ready to take on the day. Last year, Food & Friends funded 103 student nutrition programs, reaching more than 16,600 students.

Congratulations to all those involved in the fundraiser, and thank you to all those in the UGDSB community who helped support the cause.
