Priory Park kindergarten students dress Arlo the Armadillo for Halloween

November 2, 2015

GUELPH, Ontario – Students at Priory Park Public School in Guelph won the chance to decide what a beloved children’s book character would dress up as this Halloween.

At the beginning of October, Toronto author and illustrator Julie Kraulis announced on her blog that she was looking for ideas for a Halloween costume for Arlo the Armadillo.

Kraulis is the author of three children’s books: Whimsy’s Heavy Things, An Armadillo in Paris, and An Armadillo in New York.

Kraulis said she received 42 suggestions, ranging from the Eiffel Tower to Jose Bautista (with bat flip, of course).

Students from Mrs. Filippakis’ kindergarten class at Priory Park entered the contest, debating between a dinosaur, Darth Vader, a zombie and more. After taking a vote, students decided they would like to see Arlo dressed as a butterfly.

On Friday, Kraulis revealed the winning costume as the Priory Park students’ entry. “Arlo has always dreamed of flying and he’s not a fan of the cold, so it’s operation migration,” wrote the author on her blog.

As part of winning the contest, the students will receive a signed print of Arlo, decked out in his Halloween costume.
