R.I.S.E. Conference celebrates students, helping them to overcome barriers

GUELPH, Ontario — The annual R.I.S.E. Conference – Recognizing Internal Strength for Empowerment – will bring more than 300 grade 7 through 12 students, principals and teachers from across the district together at the University of Guelph on Friday May 6 for a day long educational event featuring guest speakers, workshops and more.

The day is designed to inspire the students to overcome any barriers they may have to achieving their goals and becoming successful community members.

The day’s guest speaker is Michael Chikwanine, a former child soldier who brings a passionate message about his belief in the possibility for change.   He will speak at 10 a.m. in Rozanski Hall.

Students will also have the opportunity to choose to attend two of 15 different workshops.  These are hands-on events that provide information of interest to teens on diverse topics such as youth gambling, developing healthy relationships, there’s even a cardio dance class.  All of the presenters have donated their time and expertise for the day.  Pre-conference music is being provided by the King George PS music department.  The workshops begin at 12:30 p.m. in the McKinnon Building.

The day begins at 9:00 a.m. with breakfast, entertainment and welcomes (Rozanski Hall).  A full sit down lunch will be served at 11:45 in Creelman Hall with the busses departing to take students back to their schools at 2:25 p.m.
