GUELPH, Ontario — They participated in 28 events ranging from 2D Character Animation to Cabinetmaking, facing off against regional gold medal winners from across the province.

Forty-four competitors from the Upper Grand DSB and Wellington Catholic DSB traveled to RIM Park in Waterloo on May 1 for the Ontario Technological Skills Competition.

Individuals and teams from seven different Upper Grand schools came away with medals, with one student advancing to the Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton on May 14-15.

Stephen M. from Guelph CVI will be boarding a westward bound plane after winning a gold medal in electronics. Teacher Peter Hoult said students in the competition are required to build electronic circuits, solder printed circuit boards, make cables, use electronic measuring equipment, write a theory test and go through a job interview scenario.

Gold medals also came back to two other UGDSB schools, but the winners of these events do not move on to the national level.

Wellington Heights SS students Jesse W. and Trevor P. won gold in the Carpentry – Team of 2 event. Competing against 35 other teams from across the province, Jesse and Trevor had eight hours to build a cedar garden arbor using plans they received upon their arrival on the morning of the competition. The projects were evaluated on workmanship, accuracy, safety, resume, short test, and completion.

“This was Jesse and Trevor’s second year competing,” said teacher Jeff Verbeek, “and their second gold medal.”

The College Heights SS team of Amanda B. and Josh B. transformed wood, stone and living plants into a gold medal in the Landscaping competition. The pair were challenged to put down a framework of large paving stones with sod and mulch in two separate areas, create a table with an interlocking stone surface, and complete a mock garden according to a planting plan.

“Josh and Amanda do impeccable work,” said teacher Albert Boutin. “They finish their projects like professionals.”
