GUELPH, Ontario — Staff recommendations in the final report of the Sir Isaac Brock PS Grades 7 & 8 Feasibility Study were approved by trustees at the regular board meeting on June 25. The report recommended that the program at Sir Isaac Brock PS be expanded from JK-6 to JK-8 effective September 2015. This will be a change to the current practice of accommodating intermediate students at Rickson Ridge PS for Grade 7 and 8.

As a result of the decision, Sir Isaac Brock’s program will be expanded to include grade 7 in September 2015, and grades 7 and 8 in September 2016. Grade 8 students will be grandparented at Rickson Ridge PS in 2015-2016.

In the time preceding the implementation dates staff at both Sir Isaac Brock PS and Rickson Ridge PS will work together, with their Superintendent of Education, to come up with a plan to redistribute resources appropriately.

Sir Isaac Brock was originally constructed in 2003 to meet the infrastructure requirements for a full JK-8 school, including an adequately sized gymnasium and change rooms. In the summer of 2015 the board will do some minor renovations. Mini-lockers will be added for Grade 7-8 students. A tech room will be created with work surfaces, cabinets and tools suitable for the program.

The board had considered the expansion of Sir Isaac Brock’s program previously, in 2008 and 2010. A decision was delayed because plans for South Guelph included the construction of a new JK-8 dual track school that could have impacted school boundaries and enrolment. Subsequently it was determined that the new South Guelph school, opening in September 2014 on Zaduk Place, will operate as a JK-8 French Immersion Centre. A boundary review for the Zaduk Place school concluded in March.
