Student conference explores mental health and the environment

GUELPH, Ontario – Grade 9 to 11 students from across the Upper Grand District School Board will be converging at the Linamar Centre in Guelph on Wednesday, May 7 for a conference on mental health and the environment.
Organized by the Upper Grand Student Senate, an assembly of student council chairs from the board’s eleven secondary schools, “Meeting Challenges Inside and Out” will welcome over 200 students for a speaker and workshops.
Students participating in the conference are provided with free bus transportation, and will be coming from Guelph, Fergus, Erin, Orangeville, Palmerston, Mount Forest and Shelburne. Each school is sending 20 students.
Speaking to the conference goers will be Dwayne Morgan, a spoken word artist, writer and humanitarian. He has published six books, and is a three-time Canadian Urban Music Award winner.
In total, students will be able to partake in three workshops, which they have the option of choosing beforehand.
- Anxiety and Stress ~ Looking at environmental and personal factors that affect stress and how it can be relieved
- Self-Image/ Aboriginal Education ~ Examining how appearance or self-identification (i.e. aboriginal) has changed and affected youth
- Bullying ~ Bringing together physical, cyber, and emotional bullying to look at effects on individuals, legal consequences, and talk about resources for help
- Relaxation Techniques ~ Using exercise and yoga interactively to help relieve tension and stress
- The Story of Stuff ~ A video and discussion about consumerism
- Energy Conservation ~ Analyzing all forms of energy and the fundamental need for energy
- Local Food and the Community ~ Benefits of local food and organic foods on economy and lifestyles
- Importance of Protecting Water ~ Examining the role of water in the community
- Addictions and Understandings ~ Engaging students to be informed with the biological effect of addictive substances, personal stories, and ways to get help
- Linamar Innovation Lab Tour ~ A look at some of the green innovations in the Linamar lab
Participants of the conference will be exploring mental health and environmental issues, and they will also be discussing solutions that they can then take back to share with their schools and communities.
