Students at John F Ross CVI learn through afro and textured hair program

February 28, 2024

On February 26, 2024, Grade 12 Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from John F. Ross CVI, began a four-day SHSM program designed to introduce them to the multifaceted world of hairstyling.

Under the guidance of Joyce Achayo, the program’s lead, students were immersed in an exploration of afro and textured hair. Joyce’s passion for celebrating diversity in hairstyling was evident as she vividly depicted the intricacies of afro and textured hair, emphasizing the importance of representation and education.

During this program, Joyce patiently and enthusiastically guided the students, fostering empowerment and self-assurance. Through hands-on activities such as braiding techniques, extension additions, and sculpting various hairstyles, Joyce transformed what initially seemed like a challenging task for students into a joyful expression of creativity and cultural appreciation.

Joyce’s program, Beginner’s Guide to Afro and Textured Hair provides “a culturally safe and supportive environment for students to gain awareness, learn, and practice techniques for managing and caring for afro and textured hair. By addressing ongoing challenges in the industry, this initiative aims to boost self-confidence among students and future stylists and promote inclusivity.”

As the program unfolded, it became clear that these four days not only developed students’ skills but also fostered empowerment and self-confidence. Students left with enhanced abilities, a deeper appreciation for diversity, and renewed purpose in their field.

Thanks to Joyce’s vision and the students’ enthusiasm, the world of hairstyling became brighter, more inclusive, and undeniably beautiful.
