GUELPH, Ontario — More than 300 French Immersion students from grades 9 to 12 heard first-hand how a second language can open up career opportunities when the Languages Department at John F. Ross C.V.I. held their first Career Fair on May 17.

The Career Education Council was instrumental in recruiting presenters from a wide variety of professions to speak to students about career choices and the importance of a second language in our global world.

The afternoon began with an engaging keynote address by a former French Immersion Ross student, Frank Fascinato, who currently works in Montreal in at a major pharmaceuticals company.

Students then attended three different sessions to hear speakers of their choice. Among the many professions featured, there were representatives from the fields of aviation, healthcare, private enterprise, the arts, civil services, the sciences, education, and corporate services.

Feedback from the students revealed an appreciation for the chance to explore possible future employment opportunities. Gauging by the success of the this first Career Fair, the Languages Department is considering offering a similar opportunity to the Core French students next year.

This year’s fair was organized by teachers Lucy Manno and Chantale McFadden with the support of the Career Education Council and funding from the Official Languages in Education program.
