GUELPH, Ontario — Two Grade 8 students from Rickson Ridge Public School in Guelph are among seven winners of a cross-Canada student banner contest sponsored by the National Capital Commission (NCC).

The students, Jordan and Lynn, will have their winning banner professionally produced by the NCC and flown in Major’s Hill Park, where it will be seen by thousands of residents and visitors from the end of May to October 2011. In addition, the NCC will send a set of banners to student winners and their school.

The NCC, in partnership with Classroom Connections made the contest announcement to coincide with the celebration of National Youth Week, from May 1 to 7, 2011.

Students in Grades 5 through 8 were asked to create and submit a one-of-a-kind banner design to the “Raise Your Voices!” National Student Banner Contest. They responded overwhelmingly with close to 1,300 submissions received from coast to coast to coast. The inspired designs represent issues and topics of importance to Canadian youth.

“On behalf of the NCC, I would like to congratulate the contest winners and warmly thank the many students and teachers who took up this challenge,” said Jean-François Trépanier, Executive Vice-President of Operations, NCC. “This contest is a fantastic way to better represent youth ideas and aspirations in the Capital, and to strengthen the connections that young Canadians have for their nation’s capital.”

The banner created by Jordan and Lynn will be flown alongside those of the other six winners, who are students from New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
