May 8, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – On May 7, Taylor Evans Public School celebrated the school’s 25th anniversary with students and staff.

In 1993, students and staff sealed a time capsule to be opened at the school on May 6, 2018. Since May 6 of this year was a Sunday, the time capsule was opened on May 7.

Students and staff gathered in the gymnasium as a video feed played, which showed two students in the library ready to open the time capsule. As suspense built in the gym, the time capsule was opened.

Items in the time capsule included a bristol board of photos and magazine cut-outs from 1993, an embroidered Taylor Evans PS banner, VHS video tapes, cassette tapes, floppy disks, a phone book, Ken doll and more. Students in the gym gasped when the VHS tapes and floppy disk were pulled out because they weren’t quite sure what they were, causing many staff members to laugh and feel their age.

The time capsule will be resealed on May 31 with new items from each class currently at the school, as well as the items from 1993. The time capsule will then be re-opened for the 50th anniversary in May 2043.

After the excitement from the time capsule slowed down, students and staff gathered outside to take a school photo for the 50 year time capsule and plant a new tree beside the school’s Buddy Bench.
