Taylor Evans PS creates Celebration Garden filled with native trees, shrubs and wildflowers

GUELPH, Ontario – A garden filled with native plants is taking shape at Taylor Evans Public School.

On Thursday, students planted 150 trees, shrubs and wildflowers of all different varieties in the school’s Celebration Garden. The plants are native not just to Ontario, but specifically to the area’s seed zone.

 

Today’s event marked the beginning of a multi-phase project, starting with greening a space behind the school, in the corner of the lot. Next, the school would like to extend the Celebration Garden across the back of the property in the play yard. Eventually, the school has hopes of adding biodiversity to the treed lot behind the school, planting native species within the pines.

The initiative started with a grade 6 teacher and his class last year. The students expressed an interest in greening the school grounds, and this year, now in grade 7, they are leading the charge. Each year, a new group of grade 7s will head up the project.

 

All students in the JK-8 school had a chance to plant, with younger and older students pairing up to plant together.

Also at the school on Thursday was Moritz Sanio, Trees for Guelph Coordinator, who taught students how to properly plant and care for the trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

 

Trees for Guelph is a not for profit charitable organization that works to improve the environment and the community’s understanding of the local environment. Over the decades, they’ve worked with thousands of students.

Moritz has visited other Upper Grand DSB schools this year for tree planting events including at William C. Winegard PS, Edward Johnson PS, and Priory Park PS.
