GUELPH, Ontario – Trustees on the Upper Grand District School Board have directed staff to proceed with a boundary review for Edward Johnson Public School. Enrolment projections indicate the JK-6 French Immersion school will be 300 students over capacity when Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) is implemented at the school in September 2013.

“There has been a big growth of interest in the French Immersion program in East Guelph,” said board chair Bob Borden. “That, together with the fact that Full Day Kindergarten classes boost enrolment and put more pressure on existing classroom space, means that we have to make changes to ensure every child has a place to learn.”

In September trustees approved in principle the FDK Capital Plan, which proposes a $1.6 million construction project scheduled for completion by September 2013. In addition to renovated FDK classrooms, the plan also calls for a new “independent classroom pack” of 4 to 6 rooms.

“The construction project will add some capacity to Edward Johnson,” said Borden, “but not enough to meet all of our needs. Kindergarten and grade one students already make up a large proportion of the school’s population, and we expect that trend to continue beyond 2013.”

The Edward Johnson PS Boundary Review Committee, made up of board staff, will be looking at various boundary scenarios. The committee’s next report to the Business Operation’s committee on December 13 will include a recommended attendance area for Edward Johnson, along with one or more alternatives that were considered.

A public information meeting will take place at Edward Johnson P.S. from 7 to 9 p.m. on December 15, 2011. At the meeting parents will have the opportunity to look at the recommended and alternative scenarios, ask questions of Board planning staff, and provide their own input.

“We want parents to come out to the meeting,” said Borden. “It’s a chance for them to learn about what’s going on, and it’s an opportunity for us to hear their opinions and insights.”

It is expected that the boundary review process will be completed by February 2012, in time for the board-wide task of planning teacher and support staff assignments for September 2012.
