Two Academic Elementary Superintendents Appointed

GUELPH, Ontario — The appointment of two elementary school superintendents was approved by the board at a special meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board on Monday, August 12, 2013.

Tracey Lindsay was appointed Superintendent of Program and Gary Slater Superintendent of Education Elementary/School Effectiveness Lead effective September 1, 2013.

Ms. Lindsay, currently Principal of Program with the Board, is the former principal of Montgomery Village Public School in Orangeville (2009-2011). She came to Upper Grand after being the principal at two schools in the Wellington Catholic District School Board. Ms. Lindsay received her Masters of Education from the University of Toronto (OISE) in 1995 and her Supervisory Officer’s Qualification Certificate (SOQC) in 2007. She also has qualifications in French as a Second Language (FSL).

As Superintendent of Program, Ms. Lindsay will take on the leadership role in the department with responsibilities for elementary curriculum and special education as well as psychological services, Communication Language and Speech Services, the media centre and Terry James Library among other roles. She has previously worked with numerous board-wide committees including policy development and staffing and has a rapport with and is respected by her colleagues in the Program Department. Her appointment runs until August 31, 2016 with provision to renew the contact based on satisfactory performance and system need.

Ms. Lindsay replaces Superintendent of Program Doug Morrell, who has been appointed as Superintendent of Education – Secondary. Mr. Morrell is replacing Erin Kelly, who has accepted the position of Director of Education with the Greater Essex County District School Board.

Gary Slater, currently Principal at J. D. Hogarth Public School in Fergus, has an administrative career with the board that spans 13 years. He was previously principal at three Guelph public schools, Taylor Evans, Ottawa Crescent and Edward Johnson. His teaching career began in 1993 with the Toronto District School Board. He earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto in 2003 and previously his Bachelor and Master of Science from the University of Guelph (1987 and 2000).

Over the past few years Mr. Slater has chaired and been a member of the Elementary Leaders Group (elementary principals and vice-principals), participated in the Special Education Review Committee (SERC) and in District Reviews as part of the School Effectiveness Framework. He is currently president-elect for the local Executive of the Ontario Principals Council (OPC). His term as OPC president begins in the coming (2013-14) school year.

Mr. Slater is considered a highly effective leader and his principal and vice-principal colleagues believe he will be a highly effective member of the board’s senior administration. His contract is effective until August 2015 and can be renewed based on satisfactory performance and system need. This is a new position, joining Elementary Superintendents of Education Linda Bennalick, Bonnie Talbot and Brent McDonald.

A number of external and internal applicants applied for the positions which were short-listed and interviewed by the Selection Committee composed of trustees Jennifer Waterston, Bob Borden, Susan Moziar and Mark Bailey, chair of the board (ex-officio), Executive Officer of Human Resources Jennifer Rose, and Martha Rogers, Director of Education.
