UG SHSM students participate in Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneur Day

December 6, 2023

GUELPH, ON – On November 29, 2023, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute visited Shelldale Community Centre to participate in an Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneur Day (ICE).

During the day, students were tasked with competing and creating the best pretend inventions for safer winter walks, with the end goal of supporting Guelph-based charity Up and Running Guelph.

Up and Running Guelph’s Executive Director, Kelly Legge spoke to students at the event and explained to the class how their organization delivers walking and running programs for women and harnesses the benefits of exercise, nature, and social connections to supply a boost for managing mental health.

After hearing from Legge, the challenge was now clear, design imaginary inventions that could enhance the safety and experience of winter walks, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the charity’s programs.

Each team developed a business idea from scratch, considering market needs, feasibility, and sustainability. The students were given a limited period to brainstorm, strategize, and create a comprehensive business plan and pitch presentation.

Through their inventive endeavors, students showcased the potential of combining creativity with compassion. This charity-focused competition not only nurtured the entrepreneurial mindset of students, but also instilled a sense of social responsibility.

Once students presented their ideas, participants voted to declare a winning team. The winning team was team “Safety Lights.” This team’s idea was a branded headlamp to help walkers and runners see better in the dark.

The winning team delivered a $500 check, which was donated by the Career Education Council, to Up and Running Guelph to help put some of the ideas presented into action.

Congratulations to all the students involved in the day!
