UG students compete in provincial weightlifting competition

Toronto, ON – On December 9, eight students from various elementary and secondary schools across the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) competed at the Ontario Youth/Junior Weightlifting Championships held at Variety Village in Toronto.
The competition was for athletes between the ages of 13 and 20. The students represented three different weightlifting clubs in the region:
Maximus Barbell Club in Elora
Graeme M. (Wellington Heights SS)
Jahala M. (Arthur PS)
Tyler C. (Elora PS)
LIFT Barbell Club in Guelph
Zoe M. (William C. Winegard PS)
Isla P. (John McCrae PS)
Paige S. (Norwell DSS)
Better Tomorrow Barbell Club in Fergus
Ryan E. (Centre Wellington DHS)
Meaghan A. (Centre Wellington DHS)
For many of these young athletes, this was a first time event, and many of them medaled amongst Ontario’s best. Gold medalist was Paige S. Silver medalists were Ryan E, Jahala M, and Isla P, and bronze medalists were Zoe M, Graeme M, and Megan A.
The students’ participation in the championships highlights the growing interest and involvement in weightlifting among the youth in the UGDSB area.
The event provided them with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and compete at a provincial level. The support from their respective schools and weightlifting clubs has been instrumental in enabling them to pursue their passion for the sport.
The dedication and hard work of the students, along with the guidance of their coaches, and the support of their families, have been pivotal in their journey to the championships.
Furthermore, six of the athletes have also qualified for the 2024 Ontario Winter Games in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The success of these students at the championships is a source of pride for the local weightlifting community. It reflects the talent and potential that exists within the region and sets a positive example for other aspiring young weightlifters.
