UGDSB launches elementary accommodation review in Wellington North

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
March 28, 2014

GUELPH, Ontario — The Upper Grand District School Board is proceeding with an accommodation review to consider the future status of Kenilworth Public School.

Report #1 of the Wellington North Elementary Accommodation Review was approved by trustees at the board meeting on March 25. Also included in the review are Arthur PS and Victoria Cross PS, as these schools could be affected by boundary changes.

An Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) is being created, and will begin meeting soon. The ARC has a significant advisory role, as its reports and recommendations will inform the final decision to be made by trustees in February 2015.

An accommodation review in Wellington North was previously held in 2003. At that time the board passed a motion that if the enrolment at Kenilworth dropped below 120 full time equivalent (FTE) students for two consecutive years, the board would close Kenilworth and reassign the students to either Arthur or Victoria Cross public schools.

While the enrolment trigger has been met, other factors that prevented the board from proceeding included a Ministry moratorium on schools closings and revisions to the province’s Pupil Accommodation Review Guideline.

With a current enrolment of 100 students, Kenilworth PS has the smallest student population of any school in the board. Renovations, repairs and preventative maintenance will be required if the school does remain open.

Renovations for Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) at Kenilworth PS are on hold, but trustees were told that FDK would be offered in every school as of September 2014 – including Kenilworth.

Four public meetings will be held during the accommodation review. The first one is scheduled for May 15, 2014 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Wellington Heights Secondary School.
