UGDSB SHSM students participate in Residential Construction Day

December 13, 2023

GUELPH, ON – On December 8, 2023, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from John F. Ross CVI, Centennial CVI, and College Heights SS attended Residential Construction Day as part of the SHSM program.

This event is organized by the Upper Grand District School Board, Guelph Home Builders Association, and the Career Education Council.

During the first half of the day, students were oriented with heavy machinery such as excavators and forklifts at the Green Country new home construction site in Guelph. This experience provided them with a firsthand look at the intricacies of the construction industry. Additionally, students got an exclusive tour of new home builds, giving them insights into the entire construction process.

During the second half of the day, students traveled to Sarmazian Flooring in Guelph to engage in construction activities like bricklaying, tile installation, and more. Each workshop utilized technical skills and emphasized the aesthetic considerations of creating a visually appealing and functional space. While nail guns echoed through the warehouse at Sarmazian Flooring, students moved to the next station, where they mastered securing materials efficiently and safely. This hands-on approach fosters problem-solving skills, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into creating the built environment.

Residential Construction Day is a testament to the power of hands-on learning experiences. By combining the thrill of operating heavy machinery with the educational value of touring new home builds and construction activities, this initiative opens doors for high school students to explore the dynamic and multifaceted world of construction.

The UGDSB would like to thank all partners for making this amazing experience happen for students.
